چکیده

Linear and nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection in the presence of a strong guide field are presented. A periodic slab system is considered with a sinusoidally varying reconnecting magnetic field component. The linear growth rates of the tearing mode in both the large and small regimes are compared to kinetic and fluid theory calculations. In the nonlinear regime, focusing on the limit of large , the nonlinear reconnection rates in the gyrokinetic simulations are found to be comparable to those obtained from a two-fluid model. In contrast to the fluid system, however, for Ti Te and very small initial perturbation amplitudes, the reconnection in the gyrokinetic system saturates in the early nonlinear phase. This saturation can be overcome if the simulation is seeded initially with sufficient random noise. © 2007 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2774003

Hamiltonian derivation of a gyrofluid model for collisionless magnetic reconnection

We consider a simple electromagnetic gyrokinetic model for collisionless plasmas and show that it possesses a Hamiltonian structure. Subsequently, from this model we derive a two-moment gyrofluid model by means of a procedure which guarantees that the resulting gyrofluid model is also Hamiltonian. The first step in the derivation consists of imposing a generic fluid closure in the Poisson brack...

Fast Magnetic Reconnection in High-Energy-Density Laser-Produced Plasmas1 WILLIAM FOX, Center for Integrated Computation and Analysis of Reconnection and Turbulence, University of New Hampshire Recent experiments have observed magnetic reconnection in high-energy-density, laser-produced plasma bubbles

Recent experiments have observed magnetic reconnection in high-energy-density, laser-produced plasma bubbles [1,2], with reconnection rates observed to be much higher than can be explained by classical theory. This is a novel regime for magnetic reconnection study, characterized by extremely high magnetic fields, high plasma beta and strong, supersonic plasma inflow. Reconnection in this regime...

Vlasov simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection without background density

A standard starting point for the simulation of collisionless reconnection is the Harris equilibrium which is made up of a current sheet that separates two regions of opposing magnetic field. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of collisionless reconnection usually include a homogeneous background density for reasons of numerical stability. While, in some cases, this is a realistic assumption, the ...

Role of dispersive waves in collisionless magnetic reconnection.

Simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection show a dramatic enhancement of the nonlinear reconnection rate due to the formation of an open outflow region. We link the formation of this open configuration to dispersive whistler and kinetic Alfvén wave dynamics at small scales. The roles of these two waves are controlled by two dimensionless parameters, which allow us to identify regions o...

The scaling of collisionless, magnetic reconnection for large systems

Hybrid simulations with electron inertia, along with analytic scaling arguments, are presented which demonstrate that magnetic reconnection remains Alfv6nic in a collisionless system even as the macroscopic scale length of the system becomes very large. This fast reconnection is facilitated by the whistler physics present near the x-line. The reconnection rate is found to be a universal constan...
